Would you like to help to create a new giant puppet, take part in a residential masterclass and learn from one of the best puppet makers in the UK? How about contributing to incredible and unique outdoor performances later this year? If the answer is yes then read on.
Global Grooves are calling out for expressions of interests from artists / makers from Tameside to work with, and learn from, master puppet maker, Andrew Kim. The residential workshops will take place over the course of 5 days at a state of the art outdoor arts creation space, 101 Outdoor Arts – National Centre for Arts in Public Space Newbury, and all accommodation, catering, travel, tuition and materials will be funded, as well as generous expenses offered.
There will be a cohort of artists recruited from across the country who will support a make for each area inspired by their own locality. We are supporting the creation of a puppet inspired by Stalybridge which will use ideas and motifs that have been drawn from local people, the heritage of the town and previous creative research.
The selected artists will join us on this journey focusing on learning more about the fabrication of giant puppets and kinetic structures, adding their own creative input and flair contributing to the development of this new piece.
We will welcome 1 artist from Stalybridge (or a neighbouring town in Tameside) to ensure there is a legacy of learning for future local events. No experience of making large-scale, outdoor structures and puppets is required, although experience and interest in visual or Carnival arts is desired.
Working alongside our partners and event producers Emergency Exit Arts, Historic England and The Bridge, the puppet will be debuted over summer/autumn at 1 or more events, including a celebration event in Stalybridge in September.
The masterclasses will take place 1st – 6th April.
Deadline for submissions: midnight, Monday 6th March.
Expenses of £160 per day (5 days total) provided for masterclass and making days, as well as travel expenses. All tuition, accommodation, catering is provided at no additional cost.
This will be an opportunity to take time out of your calendar for some excellent professional development and a creative break. You will have the opportunity to work alongside other like-minded creatives, learn from the best in the business, and create something that will bring joy to many.
Please get in touch using the form below to express your interest and share some of your work and practise with us.
