Ann by Megan Bruton

Introduction to Ann’s narrative by Megan Bruton

(Please be advised that this introduction is not spoiler-free!)

The first of my two narratives tells the story of a nineteen year-old girl called Ann. Her narration takes place in 1852, in Woodend Mill, Mossley.

Ann was born out of my desire to create a character who links Mossley to the wider world. She and her family are Irish, immigrating to find work in the UK. Although they leave Ireland before the Famine in 1845, their experience would be similar to some of the 1 million who later fled.

Ann’s voice became much more than a vessel for telling a story about immigration and change, and I loved building a character who feels so overwhelmed by her life of transience. I hope you enjoy getting to know Ann, and all the history that surrounds her story.

Disclaimer: Ann would have an Irish accent. Despite being half Irish, I very much cannot do an accent, and so I stuck to my own in the narration…
