Mossley mill girl to Mossley Mayor

Lifetime Mossley resident Irene Raddings talks to Cotton Culture volunteer Lauren Massey about leaving school at 15 to work in Kershaws mill, Micklehurst.  Among other things Kershaws made the felt for tennis balls headed for Wimbledon!

Kershaws traded in Spring Bank Mills, Micklehurst for almost 200 years until it closed in 1977.

Irene shares her early memories of the carnival and how it changed here.

In the full recording below Irene shares her thoughts on Whit Friday celebrations (from 16min) and why they should remain an important part of local heritage.

Thanks to Irene and Lauren for their time and supporting Cotton Culture.
