Creating Carnival

Global Grooves support artists at every career-stage, providing opportunities to develop skills, ambition, and depth in their practice. Our shorts courses and master classes provide training for hundreds of students each year, whilst emerging and experienced artists also have access to international research and development trips, practice-sharing forums, national networks, and employment.

When Global Grooves began in 2003, one of our key projects centred around bringing together all of the various Carnival groups in the Northwest (in Manchester in particular) to work collaboratively and signpost their members to further training and development opportunities. Over a decade later, we have seen participants around the region join new projects, participate in more performances, sharing information and offering support to each other’s groups more freely, and even begin studying new art forms. This ‘movement’ is certainly spreading around the UK as our work further afield is growing.

This international element to our work has grown into it’s own category, ‘Creating Carnival’. Through international study trips, conference events, extended programmes of artistic and business development, work experience for emerging artists, and partnership work with other organisations, the Creating Carnival model has been a huge part of connecting us with global network of diverse artists working in a host of art forms.

‘Creating Carnival’ programme has so far comprised:

  • Annual international relations visits to sponsor/partner in Brazil – 2004 to present
  • Creating Carnival ‘New Zealand’ – 2013
  • Creating Carnival ‘UK’ – 2014
