Global Grooves West African Percussion Fundraiser

Sunday 14th January 12pm – 6pm

The Vale, Unit 2 Vale Mill, Micklehurst Road, Mossley, OL5 9JL

Heat up the winter months with Global Grooves.

Join Leon Patel for this afternoon session exploring West African percussion arrangements and techniques to help raise funds for Kartong Festival 2018.

Focusing on percussion styles from West Africa we will use Djembes and Djun Djuns to explore West African percussion arrangements, solo phrasing and techniques. The session will be an opportunity to explore new music, brush up on your existing percussion skills and learn new arrangements while having fun with like-minded folk.

The class is suitable for complete beginners to advanced percussionists with parts and phrasing offered to suite your experience level. This workshop is also suitable for dancers wishing to increase their knowledge of West Africa music.

If you have your own instruments bring them along, if not then limited instruments will be available from Global Grooves stock. Please indicate your requirements on the sign up form.

The workshop will be in aid of Kartong Festival 2018 in The Gambia and all proceeds will be donated directly to Kartong Festival Committee to help deliver the festival.

There is a recommended donation of £5-£10 but we ask that you pay what you can afford weather this is more or less than the recommended donation. You will have an opportunity to add a donation on checkout.

If you can’t make this event then you can still support the festival by visiting this link.

About our fundraising campaign

Global Grooves is fundraising to support Kartong Festival, The Gambia. The Festival brings huge benefits to the village and community through increased visitor numbers, sharing of musical / social cultures, training and CPD for locals, at the same time as encouraging efforts to maintain eco-friendly tourism and development.

Due to the political situation in Gambia at the beginning of 2017 the Kartong Festival last February was a very low-key affair. This came on top of the previous dreadful year, when the whole of West Africa was very badly affected by the tragic Ebola outbreak in several countries resulting in a massive drop in tourists visiting the area.

Despite all this, the local Kartong Festival Committee managed to put on a small festival last February with virtually no outside support and even managed to raise a small amount of money from ticket sales. However, the amount raised isn’t enough to cover all the set up costs of putting on the Festival this year.

These expenses include preparing the venue, the sound system, artist fees, food and accommodation for artists traveling from other areas, electric power, advertising, ticket printing etc. The situation in The Gambia is now thankfully back to its normal peaceful state and we anticipate a return of visiting tourists and local people to buy tickets to attend this wonderful event. Global Grooves has pledged to raise a minimum of £1,000 towards the overhead costs of the festival but of course, with your help we want to try and raise even more.

Global Grooves will be visiting Kartong Festival and working alongside Kartong Festival Committee to help them develop their festival programme and work with local schools and community groups to produce an illuminated opening parade. This will include work with key festival members in developing resilience, financial / business planning and fundraising to encourage future sustainability.

We would like to thank African Linx for their incredible support to Kartong Festival over the past 15 years. Visit their website here: https://africanlinx.wordpress.com/
