PERCUSSION AND SONGS OF THE ORIXÁS – SUMMER RESIDENTIAL

Atabaque drum and hands
  • 22 - 24 August 2014

With Leon Patel and special guest tutors.

Global Grooves presents our first intensive Candomblé residential study weekend, celebrating the Orixá cultures of Brazil through percussion and song. The weekend will cover several different sequences from Candomblé Ketu, Candomblé Jejé and Candomblé Angola traditions. This special weekend is set in the beautiful Lancashire countryside in Saddleworth, on the outskirts of the Peak District.

Students will study the relationship between clave and song as well as learning the accompanying atabaque/conga patterns and Rum phrasing (solo atabaque/conga). There will be a particular focus on singing and playing simultaneously.

This intensive study residential weekend will be accessible for all players who have experience in hand or stick drumming, nurturing beginners and improvers as well as challenging even the most experienced players. The course is designed to delve deeper into Candomblé percussion and songs as well as allowing time and space to sing, play and enjoy these beautiful age-old musical traditions, together.

“Seriously good, incredibly informative, hugely entertaining, very intensive but very relaxed” – Percussion and Songs of the Orixas participants November 2011

General information from the tutor
This course will be a total emersion in Candomblé rhythms and songs. We will study several different traditions and styles and every member of the group will be encouraged and pushed no matter what your level of experience is. This is an intensive residential course with playing and tuition going on into the evenings making the most of the time we have together.

Time will be available to socialize with the study group and discuss the rhythms and songs with each other. We will eat, have fun and enjoy music together in a supportive, structured, focused and fun learning environment.

If you haven’t already, we know you will fall in love with these fascinating and beautiful rhythms and song sequences. By the end of the course the songs covered will stay with you forever, enriching the sound track of your life. This will be a very special opportunity not to be missed.

“Don’t be scared. It will challenge you positively and make you a better musician – whatever style you play” – Percussion and songs of the Orixas participant March 2012
