This project draws on the African heritage of Brazil and Cuba. The workshop material will feature themes that reflect common African roots. The workshop will draw upon these traditional art forms, with great respect to its origins leading to a contemporary performance from workshop participants*. We will develop pieces for the Orixa Omolu / Babalu Ayé, a deity common to Afrobrazilian and Afrocuban traditions.
* Due to the restrictions of the physical space we have available only a limited number of participants
will be involved with the performance. The performing group will be put together by the tutors who will
make their selection from participants that have the most experience.
For Drummers and Dancers:
Lead by Ravin ‘Raz’’ Jayasuria the percussion grooves are colourful and melodic, mixing elements from Afrocuban & Afrobrazilian rhythms creatively arranged to produce exciting dance grooves. The music is a fusion of ideas drawn from a wide range of rhythms including Candomblé, Samba, Samba Reggae &Ijexá from Brazil and from Bata, Rumba and other folkloric traditions from Cuba.
Classes will focus on Brazilian carnival percussion instruments such as surdos, repiniques, snares, tamborims,bells, shakers and timbas.
Lead by the amazing Marcia Magliari the choreography is cleverly arranged to work alongside the musical arrangements, drawing on different aspects of traditional and modern dance from Brazil.
For Singers:
Led by Vicky Jassey, the songs are drawn from a variety of Afrobrazilian & Afrocuban traditions and work closely alongside the percussion and dance sequesnces.

Level of study:
Percussionists – must have some playing experience (not complete beginners). Intermediate – advanced players welcome.
Dancers – some dance experience required (not complete beginners) -Intermediate – advanced dancers welcome.
Singers – The workshops are suitable for those who already have experience in singing (experience in singing with a microphone will be beneficial).

Sunday 15th September – Workshops 11am -5.30pm, Performance 8pm.
