Course details
The workshop group will work both collectively and in small ensembles playing a range of folkloric rhythms on instruments including Bata, Congas, Cajones (boxes), Bombo (bass drums), Bells, Claves and Shekeres. Raz will present arrangements that bring elements together to create a wonderful mix of percussion colours that will be guided by song sequences dedicated to one or more deities from the Yoruba and Bantu traditions.
We’ll study arrangements that weave together patterns played on different instruments, gradually developing the music by adding new sounds as new sections are introduced, building in intensity along the way until everyone in the orchestra is playing a part.
The songs follow a call and response structure between a lead singer and a chorus. Vicky will teach a number of songs that work in harmony with the percussion arrangements. Students who wish to sing lead will be encouraged to do so while the rest will make up the chorus.
This intensive weekend workshop culminates in a performance on Sunday night.
