About Vinícius:
Vinícius Silva, a seasoned percussionist and conductor renowned for his work with prestigious groups like Olodum and Timbalada, as well as his current roles at Ilê Aiyê Institution and Didá Banda. With a career spanning continents and stages shared with icons such as Elba Ramalho and Carlinhos Brown, Vinícius brings a wealth of expertise to every performance. At the heart of his artistic vision lies the Okan Bàtá Project, a social movement born from immersive workshops in 2019. Through this project, Vinícius empowers teenagers and young adults from marginalized Salvador neighborhoods to express themselves through original compositions and socially conscious lyrics, taking their vibrant sound from the streets of Pelourinho to audiences worldwide.
Drawing inspiration from the legendary Mestre Neguinho do Samba, Vinícius embodies boldness, vibrancy, and a deep connection to tradition. As a member, teacher, and conductor at Ilê Aiyê, he is dedicated to spreading the rich story and history of Samba Reggae to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
With over 25 years of experience in samba, Vinícius offers workshops for schools, companies, and tourists, as well as private percussion classes. As the founder of Okàn Batá, he mentors young adults and teenagers in Pelourinho, drawing on his extensive travels and collaborations with musicians around the world.

What to Expect:
Join Vinícius for an immersive workshop experience where you’ll not only master rhythm and technique but also gain a deep understanding of the cultural significance of Samba Reggae and its ties to Neguinho do Samba. Here’s what to expect:
– Immerse yourself in the rich cultural and historical context of Samba Reggae, exploring its Afro-Brazilian roots.
– Discover the pioneering contributions of Neguinho do Samba to the Samba Reggae movement and its evolution.
– Dive into fundamental aspects of Samba Reggae, including rhythmic patterns and musical structures.
– Learn a diverse range of Samba Reggae / Samba Afro rhythms and Vinícius’ original compositions, prioritising authenticity and tradition.
– Receive detailed explanations of each rhythm and opportunities to practice, building confidence and precision in drumming techniques.
– Capture the workshops’ insights by recording the class via audio or video for future reference and continued practice.
Instrumentation: Surdo, Dobra, Caixa, Repique and Timbau (instruments will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Timbau may be most suitable for players with hand drumming experience.
