The Floating Faces

Combining back-projected film and animation with puppetry and sculpture, our digital face puppet began life as an Arts Council England R&D project. Now they have multiplied, forming a triad of techy puppets.

The first translucent fibreglass face was created by our associate artist, Mel Roberts. Through Manchester International Festival’s Creative Lab ’19 initiative, she joined forces with pioneering developer and coder, Jo Portus, to develop Efe (the first face)’s abilities.

Now they truly come to life – all three of them! Operated digitally, rather than mechanically, the projections and expressions are controlled by the puppeteer who uses an app to transmit their own facial movements.
