Programming Manager (The Vale)

Johnny is a driving force in live music, street theatre, and community arts programming. A pioneer of Greater Manchester’s Samba movement, Johnny co-founded Bangdrum CIC and was an original member of Cabasa CIC and Mossley Community Arts, cementing his legacy in vibrant, community-driven arts and percussion.

Johnny has played a transformative role in shaping the cultural identity of Oldham. As the founder of the Oldham Percussion Academy and the borough’s Cultural and Arts Officer, he curated groundbreaking projects that brought communities together through creativity. From commissioning innovative street theatre productions to programming the Picking up Sticks international percussion festival, Johnny led diverse and inclusive initiatives that bridged genres and audiences. His leadership in theatre, live music, and community arts development championed accessible and site-specific cultural experiences.

In 2006, Johnny expanded his creative repertoire, becoming a Creative Assistant to acclaimed screenwriter Paul Abbott. In this role, he collaborated on high-profile projects across the UK and LA, refining his expertise in storytelling, narrative development, and large-scale creative production.

In recent years, Johnny, alongside his partner Helen Plaumer, successfully managed a unique holiday and events venue in North Wales. There, he curated three festivals and designed an eclectic live music programme, seamlessly blending his passion for arts, hospitality, and event programming.

Johnny joins Global Grooves to spearhead the development of a diverse live music and events programme at The Vale and in unconventional spaces and places on UK high streets. With a focus on showcasing internationally recognised performers and creating unforgettable experiences, Johnny’s work ensures our programme remains a beacon for creativity and cultural celebration.

A true programming powerhouse, Johnny’s wealth of international experience and deep-rooted connection to Global Grooves position him as a pivotal figure in the organisation’s continued success, inspiring communities through the transformative power of the arts.
