Global Grooves and COVID-creativity

But, even with the gentle easing of the lockdown, we recognise that it’s going to be some time before we’re creating anything like our Carnival productions of the past. Working in the usual busy crowded environment is simply not safe, for our artists and our audiences.

However, we want to find ways we can continue to bring joy and colour to our communities. After all, that’s what we’re here to do, and our artists and audiences need it more than ever.

We’re currently working on a COVID-creativity plan that will enable us to create and deliver work safely without making artistic compromises. We will bring you more updates as we progress, and as we – and the rest of our sector – have a better idea of what this brave new world looks like, but in the meantime, we wanted to let you know that Global Grooves is very much open for business.

In short, if you have an idea for a performance, a workshop, a walkabout, a talk or conference opportunity… please do get in touch. We can work with you to find the best solution, whether that’s in two- or 12-months’ time.

Though it may be longer before our 20-players-strong bloco is out on the streets, we could find a way of bringing out much smaller ensembles. Some of our puppets, for example, are operated by single puppeteers and command that spectators stand well back for the full experience – especially the fiery ones! Our flags, all available for hire, are the perfect way to mark out safe distances between performers and audiences.

We don’t always work at scale, either. So if you’re planning a smaller event, say a brand launch, a beer garden celebration or an invitation-only corporate event, for example, we can be the pizzazz you need to lift it up a notch.

And, of course, there are always digital options. Throughout the lockdown, we’ve continued to deliver our community projects online, while The Vale has been hosting live streamed performances, workshops and classes. Though digital facilitation isn’t always the solution, we’ve found it a useful way to maintain contact with our artists and audiences, develop skills and keep ideas flowing.

So watch this space and do get in touch. It won’t be long before we’re grooving together once more.
